REUNION NEWS

Plans for the reunion have now been completed.  I think it is going to be a great reunion and everyone should have a super time.  The plans are as follows:

October 23, 2002 – Arrival day in Baton Rouge and registration.  Those of you that attended the other reunion in Baton Rouge will remember eating at a restaurant called Mulate’s.  Well, unfortunately Mulate’s is no longer in business, but another Louisiana family has taken over and is still really Mulate’s but under another name.  Now it is Boutin’s (A Cajun Music and Dining Experience).  We are planning to go there for dinner on Wednesday night.  Everyone will order and pay on their own.  There will be a sign-up sheet in the Hospitality Room.  If you would like to go for dinner, just sign up and we will arrange transportation for everyone that is interested.  We met the owner when we were there and he will make sure you are cared for and have a good time.

October 24, 2002 - We will board the bus in the morning for a day trip to New Orleans.  We will visit The National D-Day Museum.  The museum celebrates the American Spirit, the teamwork, optimism, courage, and sacrifice of the men and women who won World War II and promotes the exploration and expression of these values by future generations.  The museum is wheelchair accessible and a limited number of wheelchairs are available on site.  The museum has a snack bar and numerous places to sit and rest. After visiting the museum we will be taken into the city and everyone will be able to find a place for lunch and a little time to browse the antique markets, candy stores, window shop or do my favorite thing – people watch.  We will then board the bus for the return trip to the hotel.

October 25, 2002 – We will board the bus in the morning to travel to the USS KIDD for our memorial service.  Plans have been made for a beautiful service.  I do hope lots of you and your family members will be able to attend the reunion because the memorial service.  Special plans have been made.  The USS KIDD is a 2,050-ton Fletcher class destroyer like the USS BELL and was the backbone of the U.S. destroyer force in World War II.  Respected by all navies for her versatility, she was equipped to attack surface vessels of all sizes, as well as submarines and aircraft. She provided vital firepower for shore invasions, and all of her equipment is there for your inspection, within her 376- foot length.  Authentically restored, the USS KIDD is the only ship now on exhibit in her wartime camouflage paint, “Measure 22,” used for the invasion of Japan.  The combat colors caused the ship to blend with the sky above the horizon and the sea below.  The USS KIDD represents destroyer development in World War II.  She is one of the last surviving of the 175 Fletcher Class Destroyers built between 1942 and 1944, the largest number built to a single design.  They were considered one of the best destroyers of the period.

After the service, we will board the bus for a fifteen-minute drive to Rosedale.  Rosedale is a small suburb of Baton Rouge.  There we will be entertained with a delightful, true Louisiana lunch, prepared by a Louisiana family.  They are truly excited to have the opportunity to entertain us at their home and the menu they have planned with certainly tickle your taste buds.  All family members plan to take the day off from work and help prepare this authentic meal for us.  I won’t tell you everything that is being prepared but I will tell you that the crawfish cornbread is something to enjoy.  I have had their cornbread many times and will stand by the oven just waiting for it to come out.  They are planning a special afternoon just for us.

October 26, 2002 – This is a day of rest.  You are free to do as you please.  We will have a brief business meeting in the morning in order to leave you plenty of afternoon to rest or sightsee.  Some of you might want to try your luck at one of the casinos.  If you’re up to sight seeing there are so many places of interest.  One of my favorites is the Nottaway Plantation overlooking the Mississippi River.  Saturday night we will have a beautiful farewell banquet at the hotel.  After having those really nice breakfasts each morning you certainly will look forward to and enjoy the bountiful buffet dinner on Saturday night.  Don’t forget to bring a little gift for the raffle.

October 27, 2002 – Farewell until next year.

IN MEMORY

Mr. Frank Bernier passed away July 31, 2001.

I wish to advise you that my father, Howard J. Sheffer passed away on January 16, 2002.  He had lung cancer and he went very fast.  He went peacefully at his home and all seven of his children were with him.  His wife had passed away four years ago of breast cancer.  They had been married fifty-one years the year my mother passed away.  I am sending a copy of a story of my Dad and my Uncle while they were on their ships.  Maybe someone will remember my Dad and some stories.  If they do, I would really appreciate it if they would send me any information or stories of my Father.  Warmest regards.  Maly Linkiewicz, 9525 169th Court, N. Jupiter, FL 33478 (561-741-8660)

MAILBAG

Mail has been returned from Conrad & Mildred Theiss, Mrs. Emile (Stella) Verbois, Mrs. Barbara Hare, Mrs. Ralph (Esther) Russell.  If you have any information on these members please let me know.

…..Just received this note 4/29/02, which should clear things up a little about the other “Hatch”.  Well….I was right about him being an Electrician’s Mate.  s/Clyde Hatch

Hello Shipmate, I just received the last issue of the Moore Memories and see that you are looking for an electrician’s mate named Hatch.  I also was an electrician on the Bell from March 1943 until April 1945, and knew Owen Hatch.  In fact, we exchanged Christmas greetings every year through 1978.  The last card we received advised us that Owen had passed away.  I believe his wife’s name was Helen, but we have not had any contact since 1978. They last lived in New Albany, Indiana and had a son named Leslie.  Upon checking on the US Quest Dex listing on the computer, I see there is a Leslie Hatch located at 550 North Street, W, Crawfordsville, Indiana – phone #765-359-0855.  That’s about all I know, but good luck in your search if you contact Leslie.  s/Clifford F. Wallace.

This is the article from Maly Linkiewicz about her father Howard Sheffer.

…..Howard James Sheffer, gunner’s mate 3/c, home on a 30-day leave after a year of continuous action in the South Pacific, recalls his happy and unexpected meeting with his twin brother, Harold J. Sheffer, fireman 2/c, in May 1944 on an island in the South Pacific.  Until a sailor transferring from Harold’s to Howard’s ship informed him, Howard had no idea that his brother had left the United States for overseas duty.  Since the two ships were anchored in the same harbor, the 22-year-old sons of Mrs. Lucy Sheffer were able to spend an afternoon together.  Howard entered the Navy November 1942 and trained at the U.S. Naval Training Station, Great Lakes, IL.  From there he was transferred to Charleston, SC for five months additional training.  In the latter part of 1942, he was assigned to a destroyer and remained on the ship until his present leave.  After a short trip to England, the destroyer returned to the United States and was sent immediately to the South Pacific where it took part in several invasions, including the Marshall Islands, Truk and Saipan.  After his leave, Howard will attend a school for advanced gunners’ mates in San Diego, CA.  Harold entered the service February 1, 1944 and trained at Navy pier, New York.  A third brother, George D. Sheffer, is attending a technical for radio mechanic at Truax Field, Madison, WI.  Howard James Sheffer, 20, has returned to U.S. Naval Training Station, Great Lakes, IL. After spending a nine-day leave here with his mother.  Sheffer, who worked for the Lake Huron Dairy, enlisted in the Naval Reserve in November.
